CPC Helps Schools & Students Learn TV
In a cooperative effort, Insight Communications and the Telecommunications Board of Northern Kentucky (TBNK) provided $80,000 worth of video equipment to help area students and schools learn about and create television programming.

The Community Program Center's Technology Director, Greg Nicholson, along with the assistance of part-time staffers, continues to provide the training for the teachers and students on new digital cameras, graphics software and state-of-the-art digital video editors.

Schools that received the grants agreed to produce fourteen television programs a year on a variety of topics, including academic competitions, science fairs, art showcases, graduations, awards ceremonies, extra-curricular programs and sports. Through this initiative, area media students and staff will be able utilize the equipment to bring digital media into Boone and Kenton County Schools, with hopes of furthering the use of multimedia as an aide and extension to the curriculums.
Public Service Announcement Day
The Community Program Center and the Telecommunications Board of Northern Kentucky recently played host to several local organizations during our first Public Service Announcement Day. The PSA Day, which actually spanned over a two-day period, gave organizations in Boone and Kenton Counties the chance to share their messages with local NKY viewers. With the help of the CPC staff, each organization wrote scripts,
recorded their material in our television studio, and participated in the editing of their projects. The response to the project was very well received by local organizations and has yielded another PSA Day next month. Based on the positive reaction from local organizations and groups, the CPC is now looking to offer the service on a quarterly basis to regenerate their messages and inform the local communities about the services they provide citizens. If your organization would like to find out more about future PSA Days, or how you can use the services of the CPC to produce local television, please call the CPC at (859) 261-1300.
Chad Brendel is a graduate of Lloyd High School in Northern Kentucky and also the Ohio Center for Broadcasting. Chad came to us at CPC in fall of 2001 and has devoted endless amounts of his time and talents helping to make CPC Sports the dominant media voice for NKY High School sports. Handling the "play-by-play" announcer duties on nearly all of our game coverage, Chad
also organizes the rest of the "on-camera" talent pool (all of whom volunteer their time), and is instrumental with our local area high schools, acting as our main contact with many of the coaches and athletic directors. Chad is also heavily involved in the planning of our coverage schedules each season, where his insight into the NKY sports scene has become invaluable. Added to his laundry list of projects is the Sports Talk show "Gametime", which airs live every Monday night at 7:30pm on channel 21. Chad helps to further the public image of CPC Sports through his interaction with www.bluegrasspreps.com, an active local web site devoted entirely to the NKY High School Sports scene. If you've ever watched a CPC Sports event, then you've seen the huge contribution Chad makes to us and our NKY community.
New Digital Gear Available

In an effort to move forward in the digital age, the CPC and the TBNK have recently added several new pieces of video gear to its studios. The most notable addition is the new fleet of digital cameras and professional tripods now available for field use. The new Sony PD-150's utilize the Mini-DV format, which adds better video and sound quality to the producer's productions. We have also added Mini-DV decks in all of our edit bays to accommodate the change. Additionally, outboard DVD Burners have been added to our Non-Linear editing bays as well as our Dub Rack for producers to create DVD copies of their programs.

For our studio, we have added several new set pieces and additional lighting to add versatility to all of our studio productions. A new desk set, more lights and several new backdrops to choose from have made it even easier for users to create a distinctive look to their shows.

And last but not least, a new Avid Non-Linear computer editor has been brought in to replace our Media 100. The Avid system is the leading brand when it comes to broadcast video editing, and adds a more flexible and creative form of editing for our producers and staff.

The new digital conversion plan for the center is still underway, with future plans to add DVD playback from our Master Control, an expansion for our new studio and an addition of a third Non-Linear editing bay.

CPC Event Coverage Highlights

Since our last newsletter, CPC's production staff has been hard at work creating a wide variety of programming. CPC wrapped up summer of 2003 by providing extensive coverage of the Boone and Kenton County fairs as well as the Great Inland Seafood Festival. The fairs are always highly anticipated shows, with full coverage of demolition derby's and beauty pageants, and The Seafood festival always attracts a wide variety of entertainers. This past year was no different with southern rock legends Molly Hatchet, and local greats like Leroy Ellington & the E-Funk Band, Funk Allegiance, and many more. The Seafood Festival is always an entertaining weekend and CPC is proud to bring our viewers the only comprehensive LIVE coverage of it. In the fall, we began covering CPC's third season of high school football and from a production standpoint it was CPC's best season. This season, CPC added digital replay, which gives us the ability to do slow motion and various other functions. We also began using wirless microphones with some officials, in order to allow CPC viewers to hear the officials on field rulings. Also, when the venue allowed, CPC added a camera in the booth so viewers can see our announcers for the pregame show, timeouts etc. CPC's coverage is always well received by local schools and the viewing audience and are always our most dubbed programming.

In October, CPC hosted a director's workshop led by Jim Timmerman, former director of WCPO news. Mr. Timmerman shared his years of directing knowledge and experience with CPC producers and staff. The seminar was entertaining and informative. He gave many practical tips and pointers to producing a studio program. In the future, CPC will host even more seminars in which different areas of production will be emphasized, for example, lighting, audio, studio production, etc.

Also in the fall the CPC covered a couple of new events like the Kenton County Library's Fall Folk Festival and the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards, which allowed us to display some of greater Cincinnati's most talented bands and musicians.

This winter, CPC began it's usual high school basketball and swimming coverage. Along with CPC Sport's usual basketball coverage, CPC added 2 new events, the Hack's Sports North-South Shootout Girls Basketball festival and the Hacks Sports NKU Hoops Classic also. These 2 events alone help the CPC provide TV coverage for 15 games and almost 30 hours of programming all in 2 days work. In the swimming realm, CPC Sports covered the Annual Northern Kentucky Mid-Winter Swim Classic, a 4-state-regional tournament, in which swimmers come from as far as Chicago to compete. The CPC is always excited to bring these kinds of programs to Northern Kentucky viewers.
